5 More West Nile Virus Cases Found in Lower Merion

Five more mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus, in Wynnewood, Ardmore and Penn Wynne.

 

State officials on Monday reported five more positive cases of West Nile Virus in Lower Merion mosquitoes. To date, no human cases have been reported.

State records show the affected mosquito trap was tested July 24. Three previous cases were found in Wynnewood and the fourth in Penn Wynne.

According to Montgomery County Communications Director Frank Custer, the five mosquitoes that tested positive for West Nile Virus on July 24 came from traps near:

One of the positive cases found on July 24 came from a trap that was in the area sprayed by the Montgomery County Health Department on July 17 in an effort to kill the adult mosquito population in the area, Custer said.

Montgomery County Health Department officials will meet with Lower Merion staff and management and consult with the Department of Environmental Protection to determine if additional sprays are needed, Custer added.

Nine positive cases in mosquitoes have been reported in Lower Merion so far this year. Overall, Montgomery County has had 35 cases reported in 2012. Ten other Montgomery County municipalities have been affected.

So far this year, the state has reported 899 mosquitoes, 26 birds and one horse with the virus. 

Last year, Lower Merion reported five cases of the virus, all in mosquitoes.

Skeeters like blue blood.
Seriously, the level of spraying is too low and too weak. Growing up at the Shore, they sprayed monthly from the air. Oily substance landed on my Dad's car each time. Thank the enviro's for banning chemicals that actually worked.
