Interrupted Burglary Costs Homeowner $11,000, Police Say

Lower Merion Township police reported to news media on Monday the following crimes and incidents from the Narberth-Bala Cynwyd Patch area in the past week:
Retail theft: About 3 a.m. Aug. 21, a man entered the Belmont Avenue Wawa and took six to 10 packs of Newport cigarettes from the storage counter above the cashier area, according to police. When the on-duty manager confronted him, the man ran out to a car in the parking lot. The man, described as white, 5 feet 10 inches and wearing a black t-shirt, police said, fled in a red car with a New Jersey license plate.
Retail theft: A 24-year-old Philadelphia woman was arrested Aug. 21 for attempting to steal items from Lord & Taylor in Bala Cynwyd, police said. The woman made a purchase, then returned to the fitting room, concealed additional items in her shopping bag and left the store, according to police. About $445 was stolen, police said, but the woman was apprehended by store security and subsequently arrested and charged with retail theft.
Theft from vehicle: On Aug. 23 between 6 and 8 p.m., someone smashed the front passenger window of a car parked at the LA Fitness area of the Bala Shopping Center and stole a woman’s purse while she was inside working out, police said. Missing is a purse, iPhone and $40 cash.
Burglary: Digital cameras and jewelry, valued at $11,000, were stolen from a Dartmouth Road residence on Aug. 23, police said. Around 9 p.m., a homeowner returned to find the screen door ajar and a man standing at the back door, police said. The man ran behind the home toward Oxford Road, and police could not locate the burglar, according to the report.
Retail theft: A man stole $175 in razor blades from the Acme in Bala Cynwyd on Aug. 23, according to police. Police said that store security saw the man pushing a shopping cart through the store around 10:30 a.m., placing razors in a plastic bag and leaving the store without paying. Security attempted to apprehend the man outside and engaged in a struggle, but the suspect got away when another man intervened to help him, police said. The man and his accomplice got into a red sedan and fled, according to police.
