The Ward 13 seat on the Lower Merion Board of Commissioners that former president Bruce Reed left before this fall’s election will go to either his friend and appointed replacement Brian McGuire, a fellow Democrat, or Republican Lou Barson, the proprietor of Hymie’s Merion Delicatessen in Merion Station.
Tuesday afternoon was the filing deadline for the seven Board of Commisioners seats up for election this year:
- Ward 1 (Penn Valley, Gladwyne, Merion Station and Wynnewood)
- Ward 3 (Belmont Hills, Penn Valley, Bala Cynwyd)
- Ward 9 (Bala Cynwyd)
- Ward 13 (Bala Cynwyd, Merion Station)
- Ward 5 (North Ardmore, Wynnewood)
- Ward 7 (Wynnewood)
- Ward 11 (Bryn Mawr, Gladwyne, Rosemont)
The seven even-numbered seats will be contested in 2013.
Democratic incumbents George Manos in Ward 9 and board vice president Paul McElhaney in Ward 3 will face general election challenges from Richard Kaufman and Raymond Fullbright, respectively. Ward 1 appointee Daniel Bernheim, also a Democrat, will be opposed by Republican Trish Hueber.
Only five of this year’s seven races will actually be races. Ward 11 incumbent Republican Lew Gould and Ward 5 incumbent Democrat Cheryl Gelber will be unopposed, unless independents enter the fray.
The only primary battle will be in Ward 7, where Harold Erfer will compete against incumbent Democrat Liz Rogan, the board’s new president since Bruce Reed resigned.
