Making Christmas Merrier with Holiday Traditions

Do you have cultural or family traditions that make the season brighter?

The holidays are a time for family, immediate and extended.

Family and the holiday traditions can be what make the holidays the most special time of the year.

There are some classic holiday traditions, such as Christmas trees, gift exchanges, Christmas cookies, Christmas music and more.

When I was a child, we used to go to a cut your own Christmas tree farm with my grandparents. I remember thinking the giant Santa statue at the Christmas tree farm and the hot chocolate after we cut down the tree were my favorite parts.

We never decorated the tree until Christmas Eve and we always left a few ornaments for Santa to finish off the tree.

My son is still young and although we are continuing some of our older traditions, we are also starting new ones.

What traditions do you and your family follow? Have you started new ones? How do you decorate your tree? Is there a type of Christmas cookie that's part of your tradition?

When I was a child we also never decorated the tree until Christmas Eve. A tradition I created with my four sons, was to trim greens from all the bushes and trees around our property and place them around the nativity statues on the mantel. We would say a prayer that the trees would grow and be healthy for next season to do it again.

My brother Harry carries the Feast of the 7 Fishes tradition on Christmas Eve with a big open house. My sister Amelia and her hubby David make infinite stacks of pizzelles, prized by all. Since I am neither a cook nor baker, I enjoy singing to residents stuck in nursing homes on that long night of the year. Not exactly the choir of angels from the original night, but they are cheered by it, as am I. It is my Christmas gift to myself and my late parents.
