Five men smashed glass display cases with hammers, grabbed watches and fled the Govberg jewelry store in Bala Cynwyd Monday evening, a Lower Merion officer told residents at a civic association meeting Tuesday night.
The men were admitted to the business at Montgomery Avenue and Old Lancaster Road about 5:30 p.m., its daily closing time. Store staff use a door buzzer to screen entrants, Patrolman David Herbst told members of the Neighborhood Club of Bala Cynwyd.
The suspects were in the store only as long as it took to access the merchandise, and they left without further incident to staff and customers.
"Thank God no one was hurt," said Caroline Kallman Joffe, the company's marketing director. She declined further comment on the robbery.
Herbst said no security guard was on duty at closing time Monday. It was not known whether there is surveillance footage of the robbery or detailed witness descriptions of the suspects.
Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call Lower Merion police at 610-649-1000.
