Sen. Arlen Specter Dies

The former U.S. Senator fought a long battle with cancer.

Former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter died Sunday, according to CNN, at age 82 in his Philadelphia home.

Specter represented Pennsylvania in the Senate for 30 years. Specter started as a Democrat but switched to the Republican party before being elected to the U.S. Senate. The senator made headlines in 2009 when he switched to the Democratic Party.

Specter announced his diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease in 2005. He underwent multiple treatments of chemotherapy and finally succumbed to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma Sunday.

Sen. Pat Toomey released the following statement, “A man of sharp intelligence and dogged determination, Sen. Specter dedicated his life to public service and the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. His impact on our state and public policy will not be forgotten. My wife Kris and I send our thoughts and prayers to Joan and the entire Specter family.”

Gov. Tom Corbett released the following statement on his Facebook page: “For more than five decades, Arlen Specter lived a life devoted to public service on behalf of the people of Pennsylvania and the United States. Pennsylvania has lost a political figure whose career stretched from Philadelphia's City Hall to the chambers of the U.S. Senate. We are saddened to hear of his death.”

Sen. John McCain Tweeted Sunday afternoon: "Arlen Specter - a dear friend who served his state and nation with honor and distinction. RIP."

The funeral, which will be open to the public, will be Tuesday at Har Zion Temple in Penn Valley, according to philly. com. Interment will follow at Shalom Memorial Park at Pine and Byberry roads in Huntingdon Valley. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions may be made to Philadelphia University or another charity.

Carl, I am not here to make any negative comment about Sen. Specter, but your comment is simply not true. Sen. Specter changed parties long before Toomey was ever nominated. Would Toomey have defeated Specter in a 2010 Republican primary? Probably, but he was not able to do it in 2004 and we'll never know what might have happened in 2010.

Traitor - the word "traitor" may also be used to describe a person who betrays (or is accused of betraying) their own political party, nation, family, friends, ethnic group, team, religion, social class, or other group to which they may belong. - Wiki

You're an idiot. The people we send to Washington are there to represent us Not their own political party. Sen. Specter was a man of conviction. When the GOP went off the deep end he felt he couldn't represent his constituents effectively if he had to toe the party line.

Traitor? One of the best things about Arlen Spector was that hje was a true statesman, not a politician. Regardless of his party, he always did what he felt was right, and kept things legal.

Because of Sen. Spector, in more recent times, I could never pull the "Democratic lever." While Republican, I always backed him hands down. Also an excellent District Attorney, shaking up the crap that was in Phila, his failure to be re-elected was a major loss to the U. S. A, and to me, too. (I'm sure former Philly mayor, and PA. governor, Ed Rendell will be sincerely mourning his loss, also).

Jennifer Ruddy - Arlen Specter was a traitor. He conspired with members of the Warren Commission to keep the truth about the Kennedy assassination from the American people and the world. He's known as the architect of the Magic Bullet Theory, they don't call it that for nothing. And for those of you about to scream out, "Conspiracy Theory!", you should know that the JFK Records Act is a public law passed unanimously by the United States Congress, effective October 26, 1992, nearly 20 years ago, that requires the release of all government records relative to the assassination. The CIA still refuses to provide all their files. Why would that be do you think? Please don't reply with the "national security" excuse either.

Andrew Wilt

Carl W - What about the repercussions we have? In 1961 Eisenhower warned us about the “military industrial establishment” and it’s easy to prove that the military had plenty to do with the JFK assassination cover up. Since JFK’s death, we fought the Vietnam War and dealt with the many negative consequences of it, the military budget of this country has grown to be more than the next 15 or 20 nations combined - most of whom are allies, and we are hated the world over for our empire building meddling in other countries. We have fought two wars in Iraq, one in Afghanistan, we will be involved in one in Iran soon enough. The so called terrorism we have experienced is simply a response to our illegal preemptive military activities. Have the American people benefitted from all this military aggression? How many of our finest have been killed or maimed?. Have the “defense” industries and the military establishment benefitted? Think about it. Had the Warren Commission done their job and revealed the truth about JFK’s death, the November 22, 1963 coup in this country might not have succeeded.

Benedict Arnold was not remembered as the brave, great, young general of the American Revolution. When his name is uttered we think of something much different … the truth.
And so it begins. Revising history maybe a goal. A fruitless one at that because the truth will always be known.
Kinda reminds me of N. Korea’s late great Kim Jong-il. “In his first match, Kim bowled a perfect 300, according to state-run news media, but that is nothing compared with the five holes in one and 38 under par that Kim reportedly shot in his maiden round of golf.

I was not a fan of Arlen Spector's career, I am a lifelong Republican who never much cared for him in life, HOWEVER, he was a fellow human being and I never wished him any ill will. Not that being a dem is a bad thing, just be honest as to who you are. He repeatly was a wolf in sheeps clothing, constantly back stabbing rep and america. He failed to move on clinton during the impeachment procces, bottled up judicail nomines (sometimes purely on his pro-abortion bent), and so many other instances. Pa repubs are at fault for keeping this fraud in office. At least ted kennedy stated who he was, I have no feeling for this politicain. Arlen Specter was a career politician who became wealthy at your expense. I am in disbelief that any of you would praise him, but it does explain why America is in such horrible shape.
Americans are allowing career politicians, like Arlen Specter, to determine every aspect of their lives. And when these egomaniacs die, you praise them as great leaders and servants of the people, when in fact, they stole from you for most of their lives. Arlen Specter had contempt for his constituents, as witnessed by his arrogance when confronted by those constituents at a town meeting.
You believe the propaganda disseminated by the media, and argue amongst yourselves over democratic and republican platforms, all while failing to understand that there is no difference between those platforms. Democratic and Republican career politicians are all the same, and have no concern for you or your future. They are merely concerned with how to take that which is yours, and keep it for themselves. They are part of a Political Elite class, which is wealthier and more powerful than all other socio-economic classes in the US.
Arlen Specter is dead. You should understand that you are better off, now that he is gone. Too bad you didn't understand that before you allowed him to steal from you for the past 50 years.

I have known former Sen. Spector and his family for over forty years. I rarely agreed with his politics, especially when he switched parties. He voted against Clinton's health care reform but for Obama's and it was strictly political, as was said at the time, he made a deal with the devil, to further his career, not for any other valiant reason. Most times his intentions were for the betterment of his constituency but at times it was for his ego and/or his cronies. As a person away from the spotlight, he was a soft-spoken man but when politics became involved, he could be vile, i.e. comments about Anita Hill. All that aside, he was a brother, husband, father and beloved grandfather to his precious granddaughters all of whom deserve sympathy and not cruel words.

But to me personally Arlen and Ted Kennedy were poster children of what is wrong with American politics. Being elected to office was meant to be a public service and not a career.

Senator Specter was in Washington DC since President Kennedy! When anyone is in a position of power for that long, the power corrupts them and they are more removed from their constituents over time. There needs to be term limits for Congressman and Senators. The president can only be elected to two consecutive terms but there are no restrictions for the true movers and shakers in the country.

Senator Specter had many virtues, but his major lapse was his defense of Clarence Thomas in the Judiciary Committee hearings on Thomas's nomination to the Supreme Court. That resulted in the appointment of Thomas to the court, where he has sat almost mute voting unfailing in the conservative block. The result has been a complete rewrite of the Constitution based on the opinion of a man of limited intelligence and obvious hostilities. RIP indeed, but his legacy (Thomas) is still very much alive.

The best thing that could ever happen in this country is TERM LIMITS! Less than 2% of representatives in pennsylvania leave office on their own. Once they get in you can't get rid of them. Just like Stewart Greenleaf the lapdog of Insurance Companies and Allyson Schwartz the lapdog of Big Pharma Companies.. They are Representatives of the Buck, Large Multi National Corporations, and even other countries not the citizens of Pennsylvania. It's been said that the prevalence of ignorance and borderline hatred the permeates internet message boards is simply a symptom of annonymity; that a persons' most base instincts towards tribalism and competition are revealed only when social structures are removed. Worryingly, this website allows people to post under their own names, yet casual and unapologetic relationships with bigotry are still commonplace. I'm afraid this discussion is demostrative of the rule rather than the exception in public discourse, or rather what has devolved into cacaphony rather than discourse.

A man, husband, father and grandfather DIED! He was a human being. His family and friends have lost someone they loved and respected. Why must people write such hurtful words? If you didn't like the man that is your right but why must you belittle him? We all know what politicians are like, it has been going on for years. Spector is not the first to do wrong and he certainly will not be the last. But for goodness sake can't you at least give the man some respect and keep your cruel comments to yourself. RIP Mr. Spector and prayers go out to those who loved you and those that called you friend.

@kevin, it is an interesting direction for "free speech". I have watched the evolution of the "Character" (nom de plume) as their freedom of speech tests the limits concerning hate and prejudice. If a real person shouts hate if it is hateful enough they are arrested. But "Characters" can cross that line from time to time and they just remove the comment.

Many times characters do not like when you get in the mud with them...you know, if you become more "them than them". they hate that...it hurts their "Character" feelings and the persona of the nom de plume is tarnished...

I credit the patch for letting them say what they say but i am not sure about their judgement concerning response content on this story.

As it has long been reported that President Kennedy's brain is missing, so the same may be alleged about some who have commented here.
Heartfelt condolences to the Specter family.
RIP Senator Specter.

If President Obama were anything like JFK, we wouldn't then have gotten to almost $20 trillion in debt.. nor would China be getting away w/ the devaluing of its currency..
Kennedy stood up to the (Soviet) Russians, Obama apologizes, and promises "more flexibility" after the elections..

Senator Specter was an elder statesman who will be missed by many..
Specter in many ways transcended partisan boundries... the late Senator was loved by both Dems & Republicans alike..
RIP...

Geologists suspect major eruption, on same http://www.coachoutletonlinegg.com scale as Pompeii, is due in next couple of centuries. http://www.coachoutletonlineaol.net Keen as they were to reflect on the transience of human http://www.coachfactoryoutletwy.com existence, early visitors to the site were often decidedly disappointed http://www.coachoutletstorefc.com with the place.
