Should Pennsylvania Secede from the United States?

Petition on official White House website, We The People, has more than 4,000 signatures so far.

The President won a decisive victory but there are still many disgruntled Americans who are not happy with the path Barack Obama has chosen and they want their home states to secede.

Petitions from more than 30 states have been posted on the White House's 'We The People' website - where individuals can post petitions and voice concerns. If a petition gets more than 25,000 electronic signatures then the White House will respond.

A petition for Pennsylvania reads: "Peacefully grant the State of Pennsylvania to withdraw from the United States of America and create a NEW government." On Tuesday evening there were more than 4,000 signatures.

Texas leads the effort with more than 81,000 signatures. Lousiana also has more than 25,000.

Of course there are petitions filed in response to these. One that has 560 signatures says: "Deport Everyone That Signed A Petition To Withdraw Their State From The United States Of America."

There are unrelated petitions as well. For example, there are 3,866 signatures for a petition calling for the United States to "officially recognize American Sign Language as a community language and a language of instruction in schools."

Another one has 1,237 signatures and asks for "an executive order barring job discrimination based on sexual orientation & gender identity by federal contractors."

According to an article in the Huffington Post the following states also have petitions to secede filed: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

So here's your question: Do you think Pennsylvania should secede from the United States? Tell us in the comments.

It is childish to sign such a thing. The president won the election. I don't suppose they would sign a petition if their candidate lost to a white person and I believe they are racist.

Where did you get your 90% figure? Hate is a pretty strong word. I would definitely say that many Americans dislike them, but hating something should be reserved for real right wing extremists which make the Tea Party look like hippies.

I don't like many elements of the Tea Party either but there are some things about them I do like. I feel the same way about the Occupy movement too.

Thomas Jefferson practically said that states have a duty to secede if the government is corrupt. Whether our government is corrupt or not is up for debate. I would be in favor of all 50 states becoming a confederation similar to what they now have in Switzerland. Each of the Cantons in Switzerland have much more autonomy that the US states do.

Between 1861 and 1865, 750,000 Americans lost their lives over the questions of Union and liberty. Are the sacrifices of these Americans to be ignored over the fact that a black American was re-elected President of the United States of America? For shame on any of those "individuals" who signed the petition to secede from this Republic. Robert Paul Sprague, Paoli, PA

Why do the liberals (subsitute: statists, progressives, marxists, etc.) always insert race into a discussion about dissenting points of view. The issue is Federal government power, size and spending. Helping the TRULY needy should be done as locally as possible so that we can have some oversight. The Federal government should only be defending the country and settling disputes between the states.

When those 'productive people' are out of money and close up their companies, they are simply leaving a vacuum to be filled by new people and new ideas. An economy is elastic, and the market can respond to changes and widen the middle class when more money is actually in circulation instead of stagnating at the corporate and investment levels. Income inequality is our country's single biggest economic struggle - everything stems from that.

My opinion is all the people signing the petition are un-American, since they do not want to live in America. To secede from a corrupt government is understandable and the right thing to do, but to secede because you are against the President is un-American. In 4 years there will be no incumbent President, lets hope both parties can find quality candidiates and make it a real election. The great thing about being an American is you can have a choice when you vote. Your choice may not win but you accept it, and try harder next time to win.

This all sounds like a bunch of spoiled kids crying - I did not win so I am taking my ball and going home. Well shut up and go home.

This concept is not new. After both of GW Bush's elections there was all kinds of talk of secession and leaving the country from all kinds of people. This is the greatest country on earth...and I know I will get comments on that as being an elitist but I believe it to be true. We can all have differing opinions on how our government should be run, come together every 2 years for an election of some sort and then let the people we elected come together to figure out a way to get the people's business done. No one, and I do mean no one is leaving to live somewhere else or leaving the union. Now...for all those states who have produced petitions...petition your elected officials, which includes your president, to start talking to each other to find real solutions! Oh....but California...you can secede and take your debt with you! Only kidding.....maybe....

C'mon... No one is seceding from anywhere. Yes, if you stop to think about it, of course it's a terrible idea. That's why no one's stopping to think about it. The final project isn't a secession. The final product is the petition itself.

It's like when we were nine years old, spending the afternoon designing the World's Most Awesome Flying Car with a friend. Would it work? Is it practical? Of course not. But the point isn't the car; it's the act of designing it.

Same goes for these petitions. No one's seceding from anywhere, but the supporters are having a little fun at a time when they'd otherwise be depressed. And there's far worse ways to channel depression, than starting/signing petitions.

Senior citizens, the millions of hard working Americans that still can't make enough money to make ends meet, returning war vets who are on disability, the millions of special needs children and adults? ...... And you're being "punished"? Maybe if these corporate bushiness owners actually paid their workers a decent wage to help close the earned income gap there wouldn't be so many working American's having to need assistance.

When you have corporations like Wal-Mart that have killed Main Street American businesses and pay crap wages to their workers what do you expect? Not only that, but they also dodge paying their share of State taxes by using such things as the Delaware loophole.

You Mr. McCleary and your wife are not the only "industrious" people. The majority of Americans are also industrious, but they still don't make enough to survive.

Because virtually every single person in this country contributes? There's more to the economy than federal income taxes - lower income brackets pay the majority of their taxes through sales tax, and the next tier pay in the form of added liquidity though interest-free loans to the government in the form of payroll deductions. Just because somebody isn't paying out annual federal taxes doesn't mean they aren't contributing to our economy though taxation. With the election behind us, can we stop it with the foolish 47% nonsense?

Working for electoral reforms, such as instant-runoff voting or eliminating the electoral college, is one thing. Heck, even arguing to secede for broader political concerns (that in the very least include dissatisfaction with both parties of the American political duopoly) would at least be understandable. But attempting to secede from the union (or even raising the question) because a group of people don't like the results of a single election is so wrong-headed I'm not sure where to begin critiquing it.

LOL The Obama administration added 6 trillion more to the Federal Deficit. That means in 4 years they spent almost 3 million dollars..a minute. They are skewing the unemployment figures, based on 64% of companies responding, the actual rate is 10% not 7.9 Our borrowing has increased and the only country that is going to hold all the cards at the end of the day is our red friend China. If it were feasible, the states should secede, but logically we don't have the military to protect our borders, the capacity to deal with global trade, foreign affairs, and the list goes on. The petition that should be cast is for the Federal Government to balance the budget, as every state in the Union is required to do. You can't get out of a hole by digging deeper.

The We The People website has been up for a long time and I believe that the current administration has responded to 82 different petitions.

I would say that those that are putting up secession petitions are searching for validation. People that have mentally ingested the propaganda of fear, suspicion, hate, and conspiracy theories promoted by conservative media (who by the way is laughing all the way to the bank) are having a hard time dealing with the reality outside of that conservative media bubble. As David Frum said, conservative media has been lying to the American people.

Reading through most of the above comments confirms the notion that "the majority" of voters in america continue to list "ignorance of history" as their number one qualification to vote.
The idea that a petition to vent dissatisfaction or frustration with the status quo is un-american or un-patriotic is in itself the same. That petition is our bill of rights. Our country was formed not by a war of agression or occupation against England, we did not seek to take over London, but by sucession from british rule! Our rule book, or Constitution, which "the majority" still fails to read or comprehend, does not prohibit sucession by the states. In fact it recognizes the biggest fear of our founders, that too strong a federal government, and too lazy a people, will lead to the abject loss of Liberty, decent into democracy, and eventual tyranny of the elite, the exact situation we now find ourselves in. There is an obligation to question authority. The path is now one of re education, or elevating the minds of "the majority" to comprehend that our Constitutional Republic, or rule of law, protects everyone and every idea from mob rule. Posts like "get out, un-patriotic, stupid, don't let the door hit you, and give these idiots an island" are lamentable, at best. At worst they are dangerous, and lead to further loss of Liberty for us all as we stray further, with each election, from what our great country once was. In my opinion, it's a disgrace what we as a nation have become.

Threatening to take your state out of the country is basically the very definition of 'unpatriotic,' and it's not remotely the same thing as 'questioning authority,' nor is a formal petition for secession an appropriate avenue of 'venting dissatisfaction or frustration.'

Bill Brantner - If you look at the figures for Florida counties - the actual results - you'll see that they are posting the number of CARDS, not the number of BALLOTS. Big difference. In many counties, there are two cards per ballot. Not everyone submits both - I'm not sure whether the second is for instructions, or for referendums - but many people only submit the first card, which is for the candidates themselves. That's why many of the percentages are between 100% and 200% in several counties, including many counties that were solidly Republican.

The sad thing is that nothing will be done. George Sorros specifically spent money on Attorney General elections at all levels because that position controls law enforcement and the decision whether an investigation is necessary or just do NOTHING.

Example: Fed AG's scandals Fast & Furious (3 Americans officers killed & 1000's of Mexicans), the investigation of national security data leaked to reporters, CIA director maybe compromised and under FBI investigation but AG claims not telling Pres. etc...

So, Rep know they can't even get an investigation, and if the details were to come out it would probably rip the country apart.

As for the name calling, Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones but, Whips and Chains Excite ME!" If I am a troll, great. I am a mythical creature and you are a figment of my imagination or if I was trolling, I caught a really big one? More to follow.

The rest of the details, My remarks, by definition, were not disparaging however, these are:
"Obama did'nt win the election, he stole it by MAJOR VOTER FRAUD and there's plenty of evidence to prove it. Now that's unAmerican!!!!!" and "Robert, The only reason Obama won was because of MAJOR VOTER FRAUD and you and the Democrats know it. There is irefutable evidence to prove it!!!!!!"

I learned this stuff by surviving, as a blue baby, at birth while my father was serving in WW II, contracting polio and loosing playmates to it at age 5, going to a one room K-12 school in rural Mississippi, working as a roughneck in the oil fields of WV, volunteering for the service, safe from the lottery, being stationed in Alaska for 2 years and a Vietnam War Vet-Amphibious Ready Group 11/68-5/69, completed college(CBU BSBA'75 ) while working full time and counseling WW II, Korean and Vietnam veterans about educational opportunities, with aid from the GI Bill and a student loan(paid back before graduation), buried 2 cousins due to drugs, being a Veteran Owned Small Business owner and voting in every eligible election and you?
Dark is when you cannot see the truth in the light or when your "Eyes are Wide Shut”?

I think secession would probably be a good thing for Pennsylvania on purely economic grounds. As a nation State, Pennsylvania would be free from the national debt and unfunded liabilities of the federal government. Pennsylvania has a tremendous wealth of untapped natural gas reserves just starting to be realized, and would essentially be able to tap that wealth as an energy exporter. What would we lose leaving the federal government - the various departments - Agriculture (we can learn what we need to know from the Amish), Education (been dragging us down for decades), Commerce (we can set our own rules), Treasury (I think we could afford our own printing press), Defense ( just my guess but I think we could handle an invasion from New Jersey or Ohio). The U.S. is going down the tubes with its deficit spending and when it hits the cesspool we'll probably be hearing a bit more about the possibility of secession. Most people are still living in their perfect worlds with very limited knowledge about the true state of the nation. The day of reckoning is soon upon us and it will be interesting to see the reaction of the crowd followers when it happens.
