For anyone to list Wawa as a place to buy a good hoagie, let alone the best, has never tasted the real sandwich. It starts with the bread and Wawa does not come close.

As much as I love Wawa, I would never go there for a hoagie.

It's almost embarrassing that anyone would consider the Wawa hoagie superior to all of the great sandwich shops in the area. I would even put it dead last. I think it's more of a case of people being in love with name brands and not having the courage to step outside their small, little comfort zone to experience authentic versions in the independently owned sandwich shops spread throughout the area. Simply sad.

Amen, Donna! Wawa is a last ditch resort when all the other REAL hoagie shops have closed for the night.

Wawa, You got to be kidding. 'Boston Style ' In Wynnewood, Ardmore,The Main Line has the best. Wawa might have good coffee, but for Hoagies ,forget about it.
It starts with the bread is correct and Wawa does not have it...

Boston Style is a joke. I mean I never nderstood the fascination with the food here. Other than some sandwiches most everything is sub-par.

Look to geography for the answer to the Wawa issue: the further away from downtown, the more people seem to rely on it (and probably the less they appreciate the real thing). I agree with Top of the Hill in CH, particularly for convenience to Mt. Airy, but my favorite is Dalessandro's in Roxborough, mostly known for its steak sandwiches.

Hey, Albert. I was surprised that Dalessandro's didn't capture the same attention as T & F Farmers Pride. I've never been to the shop in Upper Roxborough, but I'm going to soon. People spoke so highly of it.

I love Dalessandro's for their cheese steaks. Guess I need to try a hoagie.
Likewise, I've never gotten a hoagie at T & F Farmers Pride, but I do go there for pancetta because it's the freshest in the neighborhood. Make sense they'de have good sammies.

Obviously the SEO or marketing company for Wawa has placed these votes. No hoagie connoisseur would ever do that. Wawa is great for a cheap, close to work, fast, lunchtime sandwich. A real meal would be A Cut Above for Italian or Chicken Cutlet. Boccella's in Havertown is to die for, any of theirs. Mike and Emma's in Folsom is old world Italian and cheesesteaks, homemade roasted sweets or hots, no lettuce. Specialty hoagies from Cappriotti's like the Bobbie w/real turkey, stuffing and cranberries, or the Capastrami w/swiss, pastrami, coleslaw and thousand island. Slacks has an unusual shrimp salad w/provolone hoagie that is awesome, along with the usual great hoagie varieties. Fresh tasty rolls, packed w/ high quality meats that haven't sat around forever, and homemade oil, peppers, and the real Italian touch are what make these unique. No, I'm not Italian, I'm Irish, no prejudice here, lol!

Wa Wa ! are you kidding. This must have been a survey for Wa Wa employees only. Pagano,s, Sangillo's(Burmont Road), Clifton Deli, Cut Above and Colonial Market in Manoa shopping Center just to mention a few. Don't these people know that Wa wa is not the only place to shop. How Sad. Guess they've never been to South Phila.

The WAWA thing doesn't surprise me and I don't think it is a corporate effort, people take hoagies in our area very seriously but the majority of people are all about convenience, WAWA provides a better-than-mediocre hoagie experience and it is everywhere. Please like John's and Cut Above, etc. are local spots that only the purists know about. A good analogy would be how The Tonight Show beats Letterman in the ratings, many would argue that Letterman's humor is better than Leno's but Leno wins because he is middle-of-the-road and most American's are fine with mediocrity. BTW, that is not an indictment of our society, it's just the reality, that is why Subway is the largest single-brand fast-food restaurant in the world. I'll go to WAWA over Subway EVERYTIME.

Wawa in Ardmore better than the Primos just a few doors down....I don't think so. With Wawa being listed seven times, this "best of" survey is useless.

Marple -is the only Patch township in Delco that got it right! Cut Above is very good. Those WaWa hoagies go great with those pretzels under the lights! Let's have that as the next contest....best pretzels! Give me a break!

I guess everybody yelling about WaWa being picked in Malvern probably hasn't ever been to Malvern. During the lunch rush, the smaller shops are flooded with people, and WaWa is often the quickest game in town. So thus, it's going to get more votes simply because more people visit it.

This is true, but McDonald's makes a faster hamburger and has more throughput than say Five Guys, but I don't know a single person to date who has said McDonalds has the best hamburger compared to Five Guys. While I don't disagree with your assertion that more people go to Wawa, hence more votes, I do believe those people have missed the point of the contest. It's not about speed and convenience, it is about quality and taste.

It people are picking Wawa as the best place for a hoagie, they do not know a good hoagie. They use way to much lettuces and not enough GOOD fresh lunch meat!!!

You have GOT to be kidding me! Hey, I enjoy a Wawa Hoagie as much as the next guy from time to time, but really guys, there are a number of top-self alternatives. Sort of like comparing a Chevy and a Cadillac. A Chevy is a good car, but you pay more and go out of your way for a better car or sandwich. In Media for example, Planet Hoagie or Primo Hoagie, and even Vinnie's all make a higher-end, hand-crafted sandwich. Get out, explore, treat your taste buds!!

Your right Karen, Delasandro's has a good cheese steak, not the best in the city though. Delasandro's Hoagie is sweet. WaWA can be good, but you have to tell the sandwhich maker how to mix the Italian meats and cheeses. Thats important.

If you go to D'allesandro's you have to go when it is not busy. Otherwise you get gray, steamed steak. If they have a 10 lb. hunk of pre-cooked meat sitting on the grill, walk across the street to Chubby's.

I think Landis in Wayne (formerly Mister Sandwich) is the best around. Who's better? Great Italian lunch meats, corned beef, chicken salad etc, and they cook turkeys and roast beefs right there! John's is 2nd, Primos 3rd.

Lee's Hoagie House makes a phenomenal hoagie, and they are all over the area (less so out near Pville.) I was also surprised that Primo's didn't make the list, as they have a decent presence geographically, have quick turnaround, and make a far superior sandwich to Wawa. I'll have to try Bridgeside Deli and see what they are about after these results.
Cheesesteaks are a whole different issue, and I thing some of the best of those are Steve's Prince of Steaks (Philly), Mama's (Bala Cynwyd), Hog Island (Pville), Pat's (S. Philly), and for an awesome Roast Pork with Sharp Prov Tony Luc's on Oregon Ave. in S. Philly is the top of the pile. I think that cheesesteaks should have their own contest.
I spent a lot of time working at various steak shops when I was younger, and learned a lot about the business. The bread is the most important ingredient, followed by the quality of the meats/cheeses, then the vegetables. I agree with everyone that the bread basically makes the sandwich.
