On September 29th and 30th, the Friends of the Cynwyd Heritage Trail will be hosting volunteer workdays around Cynwyd Station to prepare the grounds, plant and mulch. The proposed planting plan is as follows. It will be substantially consistent with the material which was removed prior to construction with the addition of some shrub, evergreens and small flowering trees to add year-round structure. The following will be planted:
Trees> Sweetbay Magnolia
Shrubs>Smooth Sumac, Otto Luykens’ Cherry Laurel , Emerald Green’ Arborvitea,Variegated Red Twig Dogwood, Densa Inkberry Holly
Grasses>Variegated Maiden Grass, Heavy Metal Switch Grass, Switch Grass, Fireworks Fountain Grass
Perennials> Bluestar, Powis Castle Artemesia, Black Adder Hyssop, Gateway Joe Pye Weed

More About Cynwyd Heritage Trail
The Cynwyd Heritage Trail is a pedestrian and bike path that runs along an abandoned rail line from roughly Bala Avenue and Montgomery Avenue to Belmont Avenue and Rock Hill Road. Lower Merion Township completed construction and opened the trail in fall 2011. There is limited parking at the south end of the trail and at the Barmouth Station trailhead located at Belmont Avenue and Levering Mill Road.
