Top 5 Ways to Stay Cool in Narberth and Bala Cynwyd

You can beat the heat. Here's how.

The Philadelphia area is under a excessive heat warning all week with heat indexes expected to top 100 degrees.

Fortunately, Lower Merion is not short of places where folks can beat the heat. From swimming pools, to movie theaters, to your local library, below are five of the best places for Main Liners to stay cool this week.

1. Cool Down With a Good Book: While Ardmore Library is closed for repair and won't reopen until September, the Lower Merion Township library system has a handful of of fun, and cool, places to spend a hot afternoon.

2. Hit the Movies: A tub of popcorn, a Coke, and the AC on full blast? Sign us up. Narberth Stadium 2 and the Bow Tie Bala Theater have matinee shows, while the Bryn Mawr Film Institute screens its first movie at 4 p.m. Check out Moviefone here to see what's playing.

3. Swing by Suburban Square: As a child, my friends and I would spend the summer hopping between the warm indoor pool and the comparatively chillier outdoor pool at the Main Line YMCA. The thinking was, by swinging back and forth, we'd be able to fully appreciate the character and temperature of each pool. All of which brings me to: while you'll have to deal with some heat if you spend an afternoon darting between stores in Suburban Square, it might make the AC all the more pleasant.

4. Go Swimming: Another lesson that could be drawn from the above anecdote is that there's no way to keep heat exhaustion at bay like a trip to the pool. And, fortunately, Lower Merion Township has a great pair of public pools. For information on registering to visit Belmont Hills or Ardmore pools, click here.

5. Do Absolutely Nothing: Turn the AC up a few notches (justify the higher energy bill by telling yourself you're saving money by staying home), break out a board game, and try your hand at one of these cool, and delicious, summer drinks
