Cynwyd Elementary Starts Centennial Year with an Art Installation

As Cynwyd students arrived back at school after break last week, they were greeted with the sight of floating rainbows! The Happy Birthday Batik, created by Cynwyd students under the instruction of art teacher Wendy Kimmel, was installed over the break in the Atrium. The mobile – hung sky-high on wires of varying heights – celebrates 100 years of learning at Cynwyd. Each grade level was responsible for one color on the batik, each representing an aspect of the school: the Cynwyd Owl, steps, windows, doors or columns. The kindergarteners were even involved in making a "happy birthday" sign.

Kimmel says, "I heard a lot of 'WOWs' today" as the students and staff saw the finished product, and that creating the mobile was "...like an artist-in-residence project" accomplished with the help of many volunteers.

The community is looking forward to its next whole-school art project this spring – a tile mosaic installation also to commemorate the Centennial.
