High Wind Warning in Effect in Lower Merion

The NWS alert begins at 2 p.m. Friday

high wind warning issued by the National Weather Service is in effect from 2 p.m. Friday until midnight.

"West to northwest winds sustained at 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 60 mph" are anticipated, the warning states, caused by a strong cold front that will likely move into the region around midday Friday.

"Widespread power outages are possible," according to the warning. "Downed trees and tree limbs may damage structures and vehicles. The wind will make driving difficult...especially on bridges and overpasses."

Last weekend, too, high winds hit the region, and downed trees and tree limbs also contributed to the  of several Lower Merion roads.

Anyone encountering a fallen tree or other obstacle in the road can call the Lower Merion police non-emergency line at 610-649-1000.

An earlier flood watch that had been issued by the NWS between 7 a.m. Friday and Saturday morning is no longer in effect, and the chance of precipitation Friday is down from 100 percent to 70 percent, according to NWS forecasts.

Saturday's weather is expected to be partly sunny, though there is a slight possibility of rain and snow showers Saturday night, according to the forecast. There is a 30 percent chance of precipitation Saturday.
