On Monday, Remember the Fallen

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the fatal aircraft-collision disaster at Merion Elementary School.

Twenty years ago today, Pennsylvania Sen. John Heinz's airplane collided with a helicopter above Merion Elementary School. The ensuing wreckage killed two students on the playground, and the five other fatalities included the senator.

Lower Merion Township's Planning Commission meets tonight, but a proposal to expand the Cynwyd Club with two more squash courts has been postponed.

Narberth's Planning Commission also will meet at 7:30 p.m. And the Belmont Hills Civic Association will meet at the neighborhood's community center at 7:30 p.m., too.

Lower Merion High School's baseball team hosts Conestoga at 3:45 p.m. while the softball team visits Conestoga. The boys' tennis team hosts Upper Darby at the same time.

Harriton High School also has three 3:45 p.m. events today. The baseball team plays at home and softball is on the road, both against Strath Haven. The boys' tennis team will play at Conestoga.

Weather

  • It should be mostly sunny today, with a high near 72, for the first time in many days, according to the National Weather Service forecast. The overnight low should be about 55. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph, with a 30 percent chance of rain before 7 a.m.

  • Lower Merion police will brief news media this afternoon.

  • Public school students are on a normal schedule.

  • PECO reported no power outages overnight in Montgomery County.
