Viewfinder: The Color Yellow

You don't see it often, but it does stand out.

On Friday morning I was sitting in the living room of my house thinking about a topic for this week's Viewfinder for Narberth and Bala Cynwyd. Glancing across the room to dining area, a vase full of yellow roses stood out. Photographers are very conscious of color, not only for aesthetic reasons, but also because color evokes responses in the viewer. I recalled a few facts that I had learned about the color yellow.

It is the most visible color in the spectrum. While it often described as warm and cheery, it is also a color signifying a warning since it is the most attention-getting color. Studies of the effect of the color yellow on people have revealed that the color is mentally stimulating, activates memory, stimulates the nervous system, encourages communication, and can even increase metabolism, according to one study I read.

I decided that this week's Viewfinder would be about things yellow, so I set out to walk around sections of Narberth looking for yellow. It is only when you look for it that you realize how little it appears. On my photo expedition, I purposely did not photograph the same kind of object twice so the variety of yellow traffic signs is not included. The gallery portrays all the things yellow that I could find during a one hour walk—except for the yellow roses that gave me the idea.
