Coming Soon to Bala Cynwyd...

I discuss what businesses I'd like to see move in to recently vacated Bala Cynwyd properties.

There are notable Bala Cynwyd properties, which are unoccupied, or soon to be unoccupied.

In my family, when there's an empty commercial property, we like to discuss what we want to fill the vacated space. It allows us to picture the commercial world just as we'd like it. Full of mom-and-pop bookstores, and free-trade, oragnic, free-range coffee shops. So here's what we're thinking about three of Bala Cynwyd's unoccupied (or soon to be unoccupied) spaces.

1. Bala Cynwyd Shopping Center (where Delancey Street was). It's already got a kitchen, so an eatery makes sense. But, the B.C. Shopping Center has too many low scale eateries. So...

What we want: A coffee shop, maybe with a little something to eat. Bagels perhaps... and some mini-muffins. Please, Delancey. Come back.

What we don't want: Claire's. Tacky, sure, but it might take some of the shoplifting pressure off of .

Wild card: Le Bec-Fin. Another classy restaurant, to couple with the , would help to fill out the shopping center's fine dining options.

2. Montgomery Avenue in Bala Cynwyd (across from , where the Regal Lamp Company is departing). It's in an old house, so something "homey" would make sense.

What we want: A spa, with massages, pedicures, facials, etc. A place for Main Line moms to pamper themselves. Because life is hard.

What we don't want: A psychic. They tend to operate out of houses like that. Your fortune: You'll get pulled over by the police for going 27 in front of the .

Wild card: Kosher McDonald's. Remember the Kosher Chinese place? That lasted about five minutes. But it was pretty good. The kids will just love Kosher McDonald's mascot: Ronald McDonaldstein-Katz.

3. Corner of Conshohocken State Road and City Avenue (where the Lukoil used to be).

What we want: Taco Bell. OK, hear me out. I know there's already a Taco Bell right up the road, but it's on the other side of the street, and if you're going south on City Avenue it's really inconvenient.

What we don't want: Taco Bell. For God's sake, there's one like two blocks away on the other side of City Avenue.

Wild card: Sunoco. Two? Why not three? Then the Mansions at Bala could rename themselves The Mansions at Sunoco, or just fall in line and become a Sunoco.

All right. If you've got suggestions, post them as comments. If we get enough, maybe the good people at Taco Bell will hear that we "quiero" another one, and honor us with our very own Bala Cynwyd franchise.
