Obituary - Mary Block, 80, formerly of Bala Cynwyd

Block was an active parishioner at St. Matthias Catholic Church.

Mary C. Block, a homemaker, retired executive secretary and retired Montgomery County District Court clerk who always had a zeal for life passed away suddenly on Friday January 10, 2014 at Paoli Hospital, Paoli, PA. She was 80. Mary was an active parishioner at St. Matthias Catholic Church in Bala Cynwyd. She served as the President of the St. Matthias Women's Club, was an active member of the church choir as well as the greeter's association for the church.

Mary, of Gulph Mills, Pa and formerly of Bala Cynwyd, Pa. was born in the coal region of Mahanoy City, PA. on June 29, 1933 to Daniel and Agnes Campbell. After graduating from Mahanoy City High School Mary moved to Philadelphia at the age of nineteen and began working as a secretary for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. This is where Mary met the love of her life, Andrew G Block. Shortly after they began their life together they had 2 children, Andy and Dani. Mary then became a full time homemaker raising her 2 children. Mary loved life and enjoyed playing cards and dancing with her husband. Mary was predeceased by her husband Andrew G. after only 10 years of marriage. After her husband died Mary returned to work as an Executive Secretary for candy brokers. She retired from her position as an Executive Secretary and then decided to return to work for Montgomery County as a Civil Clerk. Mary worked for about 10 years with the county before completely retiring. Mary was extremely active in St. Matthias Parish for 46 years as a member of the choir and also a Eucharistic Minister. She also taught Sunday school there when her children were young. Mary enjoyed going to the shore every year in the summer. She is survived by her children Andy and Dani and her son-in-law Russ Brubaker.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday January 16, 10:30 AM at St. Matthias Church, 128 Bryn Mawr Ave., Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004. Interment will be in Westminster Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, PA. Relatives and friends are invited to her Viewing on Wednesday January 15, from 7 to 9 PM at McConaghy Funeral Home, 328 W. Lancaster Ave., Ardmore, PA or on Thursday from 9 to 10:15 AM at the Church.
