2 Hospitalized After Kitchen Fire in Penn Valley

Four fire companies and an ambulance company responded Tuesday night to a Penn Valley kitchen fire that prompted two residents to seek medical treatment, Lower Merion Deputy Fire Marshal James McCoy said.

Firefighters were summoned about 7:40 p.m. to the 400 block of Sprague Road and saw heavy smoke upon arrival. The fire was controlled within 20 minutes and was contained to the kitchen and eating area, though there was smoke damage throughout the house, McCoy said.

The two residents who were in the house for the fire were both taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for observation.

The cause is under investigation. Two possibilities are an accident with candles or an electrical problem, McCoy said.

Companies from Belmont Hills, Gladwyne, Narberth and Penn Wynne responded, along with Narberth Ambulance.
