Police Blotter: Burglaries, Retail Theft, DUI

The following information has been supplied by the Lower Merion Police Department. If arrests or charges are mentioned, they do not indicate guilt or a conviction.

On Monday afternoon,  reported to news media the following incidents from the past week in Narberth, Penn Valley and Bala Cynwyd.

Retail theft: Three Samsung Galaxy cell phones, valued at $1,860 total, were stolen from T-Mobile on City Avenue in Bala Cynwyd about 1:42 p.m. July 11, police said. Two women and a man entered the store and said they were interested in buying the phones. When the clerk put the three phones on the counter, one of the women, who had presented a Wisconsin ID, distracted store employees. The three exited the store with the phones and got into a silver Dodge Charger, last seen traveling south on City Avenue, police said. Investigation is continuing.

Burglary: Jewelry and gold coins valued at about $6,600 were stolen from a home on the 400 block of Brookhurst Avenue in Penn Valley sometime between 4:20 p.m. and 11 p.m. July 13, police said. Someone entered the residence by breaking out a kitchen window and removing the screen, police said.

DUI: Police arrested a 34-year-old Philadelphia man after police observed a red Chevy Camero moving from lane to lane southbound on City Avenue about 2:54 a.m. July 14. The car crossed the dotted white center line, then stopped before the driver then went over a curb and backed out onto the street, police said. The man failed a field sobriety test and blew a .15, police said. He was charged with DUI and turned over to a family member, police said.

Burglary: Officers were checking the neighborhood of the 400 block of Brookhurst Avenue in Penn Valley on July 14 because of previous burglaries, when police saw it appeared a kitchen window had been entered. Police discovered the master bedroom had been ransacked, but it is unknown what is missing at this time because the homeowner is away, police said.

DUI: A 27-year-old Drexel Hill woman was stopped by police on July 14 after she was observed making an illegal U-turn before a DUI checkpoint near Belmont and Old Belmont avenues, police said. The woman told police she made the U-turn to go back to the store. The woman then failed a field sobriety test and blew a .089, police said. She was charged with DUI and was turned over to a friend.

Theft: Iron pipe, valued at $220, was stolen from a construction site at the in Bala Cynwyd sometime between 5 p.m. July 12 and 9 a.m. July 13, police said. It appears the pipe was stolen for scrap value, police said.
