Police Blotter: Cigarette Thief Eludes Wawa, Lord & Taylor Shopper Arrested

On Monday afternoon, Lower Merion police reported to news media the following incidents from the past week in the Narberth-Bala Cynwyd area:

Retail theft: About 2:30 p.m. April 10, a man placed several items on the counter at in Penn Valley and asked for two cartons of cigarettes: one of Newports and one of Newport 100s, police said.

Once the items were scanned, he swiped a non-working credit card for "payment", grabbed the cigarettes and ran out of the store.

He was last seen running west on Montgomery Avenue, police said.

Retail theft: About 9:30 a.m. April 12, Stephen Groch, 26, of the first block of Ellis Road in Havertown was arrested at in Bala Cynwyd, police said.

Groch had stuffed his shirt with $192 worth of Polo Ralph Lauren apparel, including boxer shorts and a shirt, police said, then attempted to leave the store.

Police said store security detained Groch.
