Police Blotter: DUI Arrest at Belmont and City, Break-in at Penn Valley Home

The following information has been supplied by the Lower Merion Police Department. If arrests or charges are mentioned, they do not indicate guilt or a conviction.

Lower Merion police reported the following recent crimes and incidents in a media briefing Monday afternoon:

Theft: Four tires and rims were stolen from a car in the back parking lot of in Bala Cynwyd overnight between Aug. 15 and Aug. 16. The car was found propped up on milk crates and cinderblocks, and the missing tires and rims are valued at $5,000, police said.

DUI: Police said there was a vehicle drifting and swerving to the side of the road at Belmont and City avenues at 2:10 a.m. Aug. 18. The driver’s registration also was not illuminated, police said. Kiko Hall, 33, of the 5200 block of Euclid Street in Philadelphia then failed a field sobriety test and had a BAC of 0.15, police said. Hall was released to a responsible party.

Retail theft: Police said a man went into in Bala Cynwyd at 11:05 Aug. 18 and tried on a pair of $390 Prada sneakers. The man then walked around, took the shoes off, put them back in the box and left while the sales attendant wasn’t looking, police said. The man was followed by loss prevention officers, who stopped him, police said. Tayon Bennett, 20, of the 2500 block of N. 9th Street in Philadelphia, was arrested, arraigned and released on $5,000 unsecured bail.

Burglary: A burglary was discovered Aug. 18 on the 400 block of Sprague Road in Penn Valley, police said. An alarm was activated while the homeowner was away on vacation, and police responding found a screen from one of the side windows on the ground in the mulch. Police said it appears the burglar took out the screen and broke the window, which activated the alarm, because the burglar didn’t get in. The damage to the window would cost about $500 to repair, police said.

Theft: Police said tires from high school crew team trailers were stolen from the school bus parking lot on Rock Hill Road in Bala Cynwyd sometime between Aug. 1 and Aug. 19.

Theft: Police said a woman on the 65 SEPTA bus on her way to the 69th Street terminal was talking on her T-Mobile phone at 6:22 p.m. Aug. 20 when the bus was near the 200 block of City Avenue when an about 14-year-old male grabbed the phone and ran of the bus with it. The boy was last seen running toward Old Lancaster Road, police said, and the incident has been turned over to SEPTA police.

Theft: A cell phone and $150 cash was stolen from a Belmont Avenue  patron’s car while the victim was inside Wawa at about 12:24 a.m. Aug. 22, police said. The victim went into Wawa to get a cup of coffee and thought he had locked his car, police said, but upon returning to his car realized he had left the car unlocked, possibly by hitting the wrong button on his car remote.
