Police Blotter: Two Women Flag Down Cop Car, Get Arrested

The following information has been supplied by the Lower Merion Police Department. If arrests or charges are mentioned, they do not indicate guilt or a conviction.

On Monday afternoon,  reported to news media the following incidents from the past week:

  • Public drunkenness: Two 20-year-old women were arrested about 1:50 a.m. Saturday after “hailing” a police officer passing by on Belmont Avenue in Bala Cynwyd, where they were walking, police said.

Ann Balney of Jersey City, NJ, and Kelly Naula, of New York City, waved and yelled at the officer in his patrol car, according to the incident report. After the officer stopped to investigate, the women were found to have been under the influence of alcohol and in possession of a bottle of vodka. The two were cited for underage drinking and public drunkenness.

Why the women signaled for the patrol car is unclear, though police said others in the past have mistaken the design of lights atop Lower Merion police sedans for that of a taxi.

  • Retail theft: The  store on City Avenue in Bala Cynwyd was robbed of merchandise about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said. Employees described a black male in his 20s, with a gray hooded sweatshirt and jean jacket, who was carrying a backpack in the store. Employees gave chase after the man placed a half-gallon of Bacardi light rum in the bag, but he escaped. The man was last seen running on Maple Avenue, police said.
