Area Votes: Senators OK Junior Driving Bill, Others

An account of legislative votes in the General Assembly.

Starting this week, Patch will run regular updates of legislative votes from our local representatives on the federal and state level. These tallies are not an exhaustive account of voting records, but rather noteworthy action taken by our government officials. 

This week, the U.S. Congress was largely inactive due to the Jewish holiday. Below are votes in the Pennsylvania General Assembly for politicians representing Bala Cynwyd, Narberth, Belmont Hills and Penn Valley.

Pennsylvania House of Representatives

SB1151: Originally passed by the Senate in June, the House voted 185-9 Sept. 28 to approve changes to the 1987 Municipalities Financial Recovery Act. The bill allows for the governor to declare a fiscal emergency in third-class cities facing financial insolvency.

SB1167: This bill, passed 49-0 Sept. 28, alters a previous law regarding child custody proceedings during military deployment. The House Judiciary Committee now takes it up.

  • YES: Daylin Leach (D-17) 

HB9: Passed by the House May 10, this bill changes rules involving a junior driver's license and now restricts how many unrelated people a driver can transport. The bill passed the Senate 41-8 and awaits the governor's signature. According to the bill, a junior driver cannot have more than one unrelated person in the car for the first six months and no more than three until the individual is 18.

SB361: The Senate voted 48-0 to allow birth and death records to become part of public record after 105 and 50 years, respectively.

The House reconvened Monday, and the Senate will reconvene Oct. 17.
