Bad Bridges: PA Has Highest Rate of Deficiency

A national report shows 11 percent of all U.S. highway bridges are structurally deficient, but in our area anywhere from 20.8 to 28.6 percent of bridges are deficient, according to Transportation for America.

Pennsylvania is one of only six states in the country with more than 17 percent deficient bridges. Overall, the state has 24.5 percent deficient bridges to rank the highest in the nation.

Within Pennsylvania, the local area doesn’t rank toward the top or bottom in comparison with other Pennsylvania counties, according the the Transportation for America report. Montour and Northumberland counties have the lowest percent of deficient bridges, while McKean and Schuylkill counties have the most.
