Former Philadelphia Officer Fills Narberth Police Vacancy

The borough of Narberth filled one of the vacancies on its six-officer police force Monday night, swearing in Officer Sean McCabe.

At the meeting, Mayor Tom Grady administered the oath to McCabe, who told Patch he is coming off 8 1/2 years on the Philadelphia Police Department and will take his first Narberth shift Tuesday night.

Narberth's police force became shorthanded in September with . retired at the end of November, leaving Sgt. Robert Yantorno as the highest-ranking officer. Lower Merion officers have helped fill in extra shifts in the months since.

Council President Sam Quinn told McCabe at Monday's meeting, "We look forward to many years of service, and I know Sgt. Yantorno and your fellow officers are eager to have you come on board."

Added Yantorno, "I think this is a great addition and a great outlet for this young man."

McCabe, 36, formerly served in the Philadelphia Police Department's , which covers Mt. Airy Patch and Chestnut Hill Patch. He lives in Havertown with his wife Jennifer and 3-year-old son Sean, both of whom joined him at the meeting.

"I've always wanted to be in the suburbs," McCabe told Patch after he was sworn in. "I think you serve the public better out here than in the city, where you’re running from job to job."

The borough has announced no timeline for any other police hiring.
