Harriton Principal Retiring in June

principal Steven Kline is retiring his post after the school year, a move the Lower Merion Board of School Directors approved Monday night.

Kline announced his decision to faculty and students Thursday, district spokesman Doug Young said. The student paper The Harriton Banner reported Kline said, in part: "I treasure the relationships and experiences I have had here and am exceptionally proud of what we have accomplished together."

After five years as principal of Boyertown Area Senior High, Kline came to Harriton in 2005. For most of his tenure, the Harriton community was preparing for, then adjusting to the 2009 move to a new building.

"He led the school through tremendous changes and provided leadership through a period of tremendous growth and change," Superintendent Chris McGinley said at Monday's board meeting.

Kline cited the desire to spend more time with his family.

Later this week, McGinley said, the district will begin publicly describing the process to find a new principal. Parents and faculty members will be surveyed, and the administration should have a hiring recommendation for the board in the spring, the superintendent said.

Said Board President Diane DiBonaventuro, "My kids had a fabulous relationship with Mr. Kline. He was always approachable for them ... he's a really great guy."
