Merchants of Skippack to Request Speed Limit Reduction on Rt. 73

The group is petitioning Skippack Township and PennDOT to reduce the speed limit in Skippack Village to 25 mph.

The Merchants of Skippack Association  are asking residents to sign a petition requesting that Skippack Township and PennDOT reduce the speed limit on Rt. 73 in Skippack Village.

The group, made up of local business owners, have cited dangers to shoppers, as a pedestrian was recently struck in the area.

Merchants of Skippack are asking that the speed limit be reduced from 35 mph to 25 mph on Rt. 73 between Rt. 113 and Voit Drive.

"It is the experience of the Merchants of Skippack that the current speed limit of 35 mph is far too high and, in fact, encourages motorists to speed through our neighborhood at rates of 40-50mph, routinely," the petition states.

"Drivers typically speed through the populated business district which includes tourist, local residents, senior citizens, handicapped and disabled individuals, and children of all ages who are trying to cross route 73."

According to PennDOT, the first step in lowering the speed limit on a state-run road, such as Rt. 73,  is to petition a local municipality, who then can request an engineering and traffic study to be done by PENNDOT.

According to Skippack Township staff, this concern has been a topic of discussion, but the township has not received a request from the Merchants of Skippack yet.

To date, 150 residents have signed the peition.

I avoid that route unless I am going shopping there and it's scary trying to cross the streets even in the crosswalks. 18 wheelers squeezing down the street - it's awful. Hope they don't hire the fools who re-designed Rt29 and Main Street if they do make changes.

Where do I sign the petiton to NOT lower to speed limit??? It's already ridiculous to drive through the Village with gawkers stopping and starting as they try to look at all the shops - get out and walk around already! It's the way they are driving, all distracted, not the speed limit that is dangerous. It already takes forever to get through that section and it will be crazy if we reduce the speed limit. Let's make the pedestrians use the cross walks they installed, at a pretty penny I'm sure, instead of just crossing any-old-where like they do now.

A speed bump at entrance & exit of village, so travelers know to slow down...then random speed traps by state police to enforce. After receiving a couple tickets, offenders will get on the right track. It could work too, to close it down during peak events -works for July 4th parade!

in my opinion, it isn't safe to go much above 25 through there anyway and i don't care who is on my bumper. i'll drive safe and not hit people, thank you.
