Narberth Bridge Update: Repair Timeline Expected By Weekend

Assistant borough manager Fred Hansell said work must take place overnight, by Amtrak regulation.

The timeline for the repair and reopening of the Narberth Avenue bridge should be known by Monday, after borough officials met with engineering and construction staff Thursday morning, assistant borough manager Fred Hansell told Patch.

A PennDOT inspection Sept. 15 discovered enough weakness in the 109-year-old bridge's steel girders for the agency to to vehicle traffic. Pedestrian traffic was days later.

Hansell said the steel for the repairs is on hand and that work will need to proceed at night, per Amtrak regulation. The bridge spans train tracks for Amtrak and SEPTA.

Within "two or three days," Hansell said, officials should know how long construction is expected to take, and thus approximately when the bridge can resume its role as the lone north-south traffic connection in the borough.
