Narberth Fires Police Officer

Officer Michael Gannon of the Narberth Police Department was fired Monday night, effective immediately, by unanimous vote of the Borough Council.

The seven-member council had met in closed session Wednesday and earlier Monday night discussing Gannon's employment. Each member voted in favor of removing Gannon from the force for reasons including "neglect or violation of official duties, intemperance, disobedience of orders and conduct unbecoming an officer."

Borough officials declined to elaborate on what prompted them to fire Gannon. Council President Sam Quinn said that because Gannon has a right of appeal, "the borough will make no further comment on this matter at this time."

The shifts left uncovered by Gannon's termination will be covered mostly by Narberth officers working overtime, said Sgt. Bob Yantorno, the police department's highest ranking uniformed employee. Lower Merion Police Department officers provide occasional supplementary coverage.
