PATV Could Continue Operations for Two More Years

The Lower Merion Commissioners' approval is contingent upon recommendations.

The Lower Merion Board of Commissioners Telecommunications Committee on Wednesday night unanimously recommended that the full board approve the continued operation of the township's public access channel by the Lower Merion and Narberth Public Access Television Corp. (PATV) for two more years, contingent upon recommendations which were made by the Cable Television Advisory Committee.

The recommendations made by the Cable Television Advisory Committee (CTAC) are that PATV expand its fundraising, increase the number of working volunteers and locate the base of PATV operations at a place conducive to public participation.

The PATV Board of Directors must provide a business plan for meeting the CTAC’s recommended goals no later than June 30, 2012.

Commissioner Cheryl Gelber, chairwoman of the Telecommunications Committee, said the CTAC wants to make sure that when PATV’s founder, president and CEO Irene McNeil retires at the end of 2012, “the Public Access Channel continues to thrive and grow.”

McNeil told the Telecommunication Committee that the physical operations of the PATV are currently located in her home office and while she has also spent more than 1,500 hours working in the Comcast Levering Mill Studio, she does not agree with CTAC’s suggestion to move PATV’s base of operations to the Comcast studio because not all of the equipment she now stores at her home will fit at Comcast.

McNeil said PATV is exploring finding a community location for PATV in Ardmore.
