PennDOT Launching $2.3 Million Project to Secure Rocks Along Schuylkill

There will be occasional lane closures on 76 east during the work.

Later this month, PennDOT will launch a $2.3 million project to enhance safety along eastbound Interstate 76 in Lower Merion Township.

The project, which run run from August to November, will stabilize the rocky hillside adjacent to I-76’s eastbound lanes near the Route 23 Interchange.

Crews will remove loose rock and bolt the remaining rock in place as a preventative measure to keep rock from falling onto the expressway.

“This operation will secure the hillside to protect motorists from potential rockslides, similar to what occurred two years ago at this location,” PennDOT District Executive Lester C. Toaso said in a release.

“The deterioration of the rock in this area resulted from joints becoming weak due to natural processes, such as the freeze-thaw cycle and foliage growth.”

Eastbound travel on I-76 will be reduced to one lane on August 15, 16, and 22 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., while PennDOT restripes the pavement. Though, in the event of rain, the operation will be rescheduled to the following night.

Intermittent, overnight closures of I-76’s eastbound right lane also will occur near the Route 23 Interchange during the course of the project, according to PennDOT. Motorists are advised to allow additional time for travel.

The project, which covers a distance of a half mile, is financed entirely with state funds.

Motorists can log on to www.511pa.com or call 511 from any phone to check traffic conditions on I-76 and other major highways before heading out.
