Judge Blocks Riverfront Apartments in Bala Cynwyd, Report Says

The Main Line Times cites a Court of Common Pleas ruling that would undo a conditional approval by the Lower Merion Board of Commissioners.

A Court of Common Pleas judge has overturned a development permit the Lower Merion Board of Commissioners issued in 2010 for hundreds of apartments to be built next to the Schuylkill River in Bala Cynwyd, the Main Line Times reported Friday afternoon.

Developer Brian O'Neill's 569-unit project at the end of Righters Ferry Road had come even closer to reality this June. The board among itself, O'Neill and adjacent riverfront property owner Penn Realty, but those documents may now be moot.

In Judge Kelly Wall's opinion, according to the Main Line Times, the project would not sufficiently meet criteria for development in that area, which includes a manufacturing zoning district and a floodplain.

The three main sources of dioxin are steel/iron mills, cement plants, and paper mills.Dioxin breaks down very slowly and remains in the environment for years and years. The Roberts brothersk Algernon and Percival, founded a iron mill there and specialized in trestle bridges. J. P. Morgan in his quest to monopolize iron/steel production bought the plant around 1900 and ran it until the Great Depression closed it. Later Connally bought the land and used for a paper mill, to build giant cartons for shipping large produce such as watermelons. Calling Riverfron a "brownfield" is a euphemism of the highest order. Mr. O'Niell has claimed that he will clean up Riverfront but the question is to whose satisfaction? I cannot imagine anyone wanting to live there.

So, in your opinion, it should remain untouched forever? There are standards tha must be adhered to, so why would you want to leave it contaminated?

John was there actually a point to any of that? Congratulations on your Wikipedia search on the site. O'Neill has successfully converted dozens of highly contaminated sites to safe, beautiful new developments. This is just another instance of ego-maniacal local officials in Lower Merion blocking development because they're snobs and don't want anything other than million dollar homes. The commissioners should have resolved this years ago and helped O'Neill get this done for the betterment of the community.
