State Rep. Mike Vereb, who serves the Collegeville area, helped to unite warring factions of the Montgomery County Republican Committee in recent months.

State Rep. Mike Vereb may soon be wearing another hat, in addition to representing residents from the Collegeville area—he will likely assume the post of Montgomery County Republican Committee Chairman.

Vereb confirmed that he plans to run for the position, which was vacated after Upper Gwynedd attorney Robert J. Kerns, the subject of a sexual assault investigation, tendered his resignation this week.

Vereb, if elected at a Dec. 4 special meeting of the committee, will hold the post through May or June of 2014.

According to Republican officials, Vereb has secured support among many key leaders in the Republican Party, including the Montgomery County Republicans delegation in the State House.

Vereb was a key player in bringing together warring factions of the party – specifically Vahan Gureghian, a charter school CEO from Lower Merion, and Souderton businessman Robert Asher.

At the organization’s fall dinner on Oct. 24, Governor Tom Corbett announced the truce between Gureghian and Asher, signaling the end a divide that impacted the organization’s success for nearly 20 years.

Montgomery County Commissioner Bruce Castor, who did not participate in the Oct. 24 meeting, also voiced his support for Vereb, according to the Times Herald.

“This man has been able to bring together all the warring factions in the Republican Party.” Castor said. “He has my personal and professional respect.”

As Patch previously reported, county leaders were contemplating new chairmen candidates long before Kerns resigned, due to rumors of his criminal investigation; State Rep. Kate Harper, of Lower Gwynedd, and Abington attorney Robert Adshead had expressed interest, but both stepped aside as support for Vereb mounted.

Vereb served in the State House since 2007, and previously served on the West Norriton Township Board of Commissioners. Vereb previously served as police officer in West Conshohocken.
