How can I treat my toenail fungus?

There are many causes of nail changes but one of the most common is toenail fungus. Signs of toenail fungus can include yellow discoloration starting at the top of the nail, thickening of the nail, separation of the end of the nail from the nail bed and crumbly debris located beneath the nail. One or multiple toenails can be involved. Often individuals will report a history of athlete foot problems. Since other conditions can result in nail changes a nail clipping is usually taken and sent to a laboratory for confirmation of the diagnosis. If toenail fungus or onychomycosis is confirmed then treatment can be initiated. One of the most effective treatments involves taking an oral antifungal medication for a period of three months. Liver blood tests are needed during the course of treatment. The medication will not instantly improve the appearance of the nails but rather will help the new nail to grow out normally. Another effective method is treatment with the Pinpointe laser. This treatment is offered at some podiatrists offices but insurance coverage for the service varies. Topical prescription antifungal medications can also be used but these have a significantly lower efficacy rating. Unfortunately, toenail fungus has a high recurrence rate despite method of treatment. Since other conditions may be causing the problem the toenails should be evaluated by a dermatologist or podiatrist before an assumption of toenail fungus is made.
