First Annual 5K Race to be Held at Cynwyd Heritage Trail

The Friends of the Cynwyd Heritage Trail (FOCHT) along with the Neighborhood Club of Bala Cynwyd and West Laurel Hill Cemetery are organizing the first annual 5K Run / 1-mile walk on Sunday, May 6, 2012 at 1 p.m., on the Cynwyd Heritage Trail. This recreation event will be held rain or shine.

Participants should check in starting at noon at the Barmouth Trailhead at the East end of Levering Mill Road (near the cross street of Belmont Avenue) in Bala Cynwyd, Pa. The race is scheduled to start at 1 p.m., and the walk will follow at 1:15 p.m. Water will be available on the course, and all race participants will receive t-shirts. The Friends of the Cynwyd Heritage Trail will be providing refreshments.

Awards will be given according to five different age groups, including 18 and under, and for the first male and female finishers. Also, all registered walk participants will receive a medal. The race registration fee is $25 online and $30 on the day of the event. Space is limited to 150 registrants. The walk registration fee is $25 per family (5-person maximum) and $3 for each additional child and $10 per individual. Participants follow a self-guided tour of scenic West Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Limited parking is available at the Barmouth and Bala Cynwyd Playground Trailheads and at Sid’s Automotive at the corner of Belmont Avenue and Levering Mill Road. Register online at  http://www.cynwydtrail.org/cynwyd5k/ or mail payment with the form to: P.O. Box 695, Bala Cynwyd, Pa. 19004. Make check payable to “Friends of the Cynwyd Heritage Trail.”

According to Selene George, Board President of the Friends of the Cynwyd Heritage Trail, “The Friends are looking forward to teaming with the Neighborhood Club and West Laurel Hill to raise money for Cynwyd Heritage Trail improvements. This is the first joint venture with the three organizations.”

The Friends of the Cynwyd Heritage Trail (FOCHT) was founded in 2008 by a group of dedicated volunteers committed to supporting the construction of the Trail. Currently, the Friends focus on supporting the volunteer efforts in beautifying the park. In the future, the group hopes to support the recreational and educational resources of the park and provide for trail amenities.
