Lower Merion, Harriton Compete in Central League Track Championships

A number of athletes won league titles for the first time.

The Central League track championships represent that last test, the final big meet where athletes can hone their technique, where they can fine tune and slice off more seconds of their times. Wednesday’s league championship also meant a variety of things to a number of athletes competing.

With the District 1 Championships next Thursday and Friday at Coatesville, the Central League championship represented the final tuneup before qualifying for the state championship.

Radnor’s Lydia Ali was the sprint star, taking the 200 and 400, while Lower Merion junior Eliana Yankelev stood out winning the 100-meter hurdles and high jump, and Marple Newtown’s Andrew Brandt captured his first league championship, winning the boys’ high jump.

Haverford also had an excellent day, as the Fords’ Mike Pettit won the 400-meter dash and Woo Kim in the 800 on the boys’ side, while Haverford had Sophia and Tess Meehan, Melissa Scanzano and Nataya Worthington all winners in the girls’ side. In the field events, Penncrest’s Chris Amabile took the shot put, and Radnor’s Troy Makous won the pole vault.

But it was Ali again, the defending PIAA state 100-meter champion, that saw a dramatic drop in her 200-meter time, when she ran a personal best 24.3 seconds, something she didn’t even expect to do.

“No, not really, I didn’t see 24.3 at all,” Ali said. “Like any meet, I came into this with the intention to do my best and see what happens. This is the last meet before districts and I wanted to make it a good one. The 24.3 was good, it tells me all my hard work this year is paying off. But we’ll see what I run at districts. I’m still debating between the 200 and 400, because I like them off.”

Yankelev also starred. She had probably the most grueling day of anyone competing Wednesday. She left the high jump to immediately compete in the 100-meter hurdles prelim race, then after the race, ran right back to the high jump, where she leaped 5-feet, 2-inches to win.

“This was important because last year at this time, I was hurt,” Yankelev said. “These are my first league championship medals. It was frustrating, real frustrating last year. There was tendontitis and I feel better now. For me, it’s a big day, and hopefully I could use this for the districts. The goal is to be in the top four in the 100 hurdles for districts, and this is about getting ready for next week.”

The 6-foot-7 Brandt also won a league title for the first time. The Marple Newtown basketball player jumped 6-foot-4 to capture the high jump, and he reached that after missing his first attempt at 6-foot-2.

“I had to adjust my steps, and once I did, I was fine, I easily got 6-2 on my second attempt,” Brandt said. “I just starting high jumping a few years ago, for me, it’s really fun. It’s helps my basketball a little. But I didn’t see this coming, I didn’t expect to win this. I thought I’d get second, because I never beat [Ridley’s Derek] Dawson before, so this was another first. I’m looking forward to districts and hopefully some bigger things ahead.”
