State Police to Increase Traffic Patrols Over Labor Day Weekend

The Pennsylvania State Police will step up its traffic enforcement over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

During the Labor Day weekend, the Pennsylvania State Police will increase traffic enforcement due to the increased activity on the roadways.

The increased patrols will run from Friday, Aug. 31 through Monday, Sept. 3.

Police will seek out and cite careless and aggressive drivers and arrest any alcohol or drug-impaired motorists.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will also be involved with police on the Labor Day DUI enforcement campaign.

PennDOT, along with police, will participate in the national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign through Sept. 3. During the Labor Day holiday enforcement, Pennsylvania’s effort will highlight the increasing issue of drug-impaired drivers and conduct roving patrols and DUI checkpoints, according to a PennDOT press release.

The Pennsylvania DUI Association’s DUI Victims’ Moving Memorial will also be on display to honor and remember those who lost their lives because of impaired drivers.

In 2011, there were 11,778 alcohol-related crashes in Pennsylvania with 425 fatalities in those crashes, and 3,073 drug-related crashes statewide resulting in 116 fatalities, according to a PennDOT press release.

Over the Labor Day weekend in 2011, there were 111 alcohol-related crashes with three fatalities and 22 drug-related crashes statewide, according to a PennDOT press release.

State Police remind everyone to wear a seat belt and drive safely and remind motorists that a vehicle's headlights must be on when the windshield wipers are on.

Motorists are also reminded that they are required to slow down and use caution when they see law enforcement or an emergency vehicle stopped alongside the road with its lights flashing. Drivers must move over to the other lane if possible and reduce their speed as they pass.
