A First-Class Community

Sometimes change is good, but sometimes it is better to protect quality.

Tuesday is primary election day.  While we won't be voting for president, Senate, Congress, or governor, that does not mean that the election does not matter.  In fact, the more local the election, the more direct the impact on the people.

Lower Merion prides itself on being a first-class community and it certainly has a reputation for that across the region.  In fact, while other townships have struggled to maintain a high standard of living during the recent economic downturn, Lower Merion and Narberth continue to move forward with good schools, new libraries, safe streets, and other quality services that make this area a place where everybody wants to live.  Under the leadership of Board of Commissioners president Liz Rogan, Lower Merion has bucked the national trends and continues a tradition of a quality standard of living that attracts families to move here.  Indeed, Lower Merion is one of those townships where people plan to live in the future, and that is a great reputation to have.

To be sure, any township has issues and nothing is ever perfect.  It is a good thing to have a vibrant political process anywhere and everywhere.  Elections are what keep politicians of all parties attuned to the people and provide critical accountability.  In 2010, 2008, and 2006, voters from both sides of the aisle were driven by the desire for change, voting out many incumbents...because.  Change can be good and that desire for change can light a fire under politicians to make sure they are doing the right thing and listening to their voters.  Sometimes though, change is not what we need.  Considering the high standard of living and quality services in our township, we should keep the quality of leadership in Lower Merion, and not change things just for the sake of change.

I hope people vote on Tuesday, regardless of party.  Whether you like any incumbents or not, the only way to ensure accountability is to show up at the polls.  As the saying goes, you get what you vote for, and in Lower Merion, people have gotten quite a bit.
