Neighborhood Club of Bala Cynwyd Talks City Avenue, Righters Ferry Road

At the Neighborhood Club of Bala Cynwyd civic association's monthly meeting Tuesday night, topics of discussion included:

• Members were reminded that Bala Cynwyd's state Rep. Pam DeLissio will hold an town hall meeting April 18 at .
• The club's May 8 meeting will be held at headquarters, rather than at the usual site, the Lower Merion Academy building.
• The academy building's 200th anniversary will be celebrated April 28, first at the building from 1-3 p.m., then at the from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Proceeds from a variety of activities at the event benefit the renovation of the Cynwyd train station, organizer Sarah Francis told the club.
• Commissioner George Manos said the Planning Commission has passed a preliminary plan for the development of more than 500 apartments at the Schuylkill River end of Righters Ferry Road, and Commissioner Paul McElhaney said there have been signs that the three-way legal stalemate among the township and two developers may be closer to ending. However, Manos said, some commissioners have "serious issues" with the apartment project, such as the scale of it: "At the moment, the Righters Ferry Road thing is totally a tossup."
• Members emphasized their desire for City Avenue infrastructure improvements to be allocated as much as possible of the township's recent $6.9 million tax windfall. An unspecified amount has been dedicated to capital improvements, by vote of the Board of Commissioners.
• Anne Greenhalgh, organizer of the club's Fourth of July festivities, got her fellow members approval to pursue guest speakers and to plan honors for the citizens of the year (the Friends of the Cynwyd Heritage Trail) and the merchant of the year (the ).
  Greenhalgh also commended resident Louis Barson for spearheading a three-tiered fundraising plan. Barson said he would pursue larger corporate donors with a goal of $12,000 in sponsorships.
• There has been no progress toward approval for a proposed CVS at Belmont Avenue and Rock Hill Road, McElhaney said.
