Will This Church Stay Standing?

Narberth United Methodist Church is for sale for $1.7 million. Without a religious use, the property is zoned residential.

The Narberth United Methodist Church sanctuary at Price and Essex avenues is set to close early next year. Plenty of people—in the congregation, the borough and surely elsewhere—consider the building valuable, even vital. What the building is not is protected from demolition. Nor is the parsonage next door; it was built in 1900, 20 years before the main church building. "You don’t know whats going to happen to the building," said Marolyn Buchanan, a Narberth UMC member since the 1960s. "We just hope whoever purchases it doesn’t tear it down." Narberth real estate agent John Duffy is marketing the property, for an asking price for $1.7 million.  "Some religious institutions have expressed interest, and a few developers have," Duffy told …

With Church Closing, What's Narberth Food Bank's Future?

Organizer Gigi Tevlin-Moffat wants to keep the group in the borough.

Among those community groups affected by Narberth United Methodist Church's plan to close early next year is the Narberth Community Food Bank. Though she "kind of knew it was coming," food bank organizer Gigi Tevlin-Moffat said she didn't officially know the church was for sale until a conversation with Patch on Tuesday. Still, she was immediately grateful for the past and confident in the future. "They've been exceptionally generous and caring for us to be in that space. They've been more than generous as a congregation," Tevlin-Moffat said. "I think that it'll take a while to sell the building, and I think we'll be OK, we'll find another space. We'll forge on." Narberth UMC pastor Lydia Munoz said even after the congregation moves to the…

Narberth United Methodist Church Closing, Property for Sale

The congregation is merging with a Bryn Mawr church in early 2013. Community groups in Narberth need a new home.

(Editor's note: This is the first article of a three-day series about a Narberth church closing next year. Visit Patch on Thursday and Friday for more coverage.) Narberth United Methodist Church's congregation has decided to sell the property and attend a Bryn Mawr church instead, and the effect will extend well beyond the walls of both buildings. The 1-acre church property at Essex and Price avenues will go on the market within a week for an asking price of $1.7 million, said Narberth real estate agent John Duffy. Members voted just before Easter to merge with another church and were soon welcomed by St. Luke United Methodist Church, said Narberth UMC pastor Lydia Munoz. The United Methodist Church will discontinue the Narberth charter in…

Does any one have any more news on this property? I live across the street and am very curious as to what the new buyer is going to do with the property. Another article said that they plan on turning the church into 11 condos. Does that mean they will knock down the church, or will they simply convert the same building into 11 different condos? Thanks!   more ›
