Jorge Cruz is charged with three Lower Merion Township burglaries, one Radnor Township burglary and related charges, according to police and court documents.
Jorge Cruz, 46, of N. Randolph Street in Philadelphia, has been arrested on multiple burglary charges, Lower Merion police announced Wednesday. Philadelphia Police arrested Cruz in connection to a burglary and recovered "numerous items of jewelry which also linked Cruz to burglaries in Lower Merion Township," Lower Merion police said. Cruz is charged with four counts of burglary, a first-degree felony, along with four counts each of criminal tresspassing, theft by unlawful taking, and receiving stolen property, all third-degree felonies, according to court documents. The Bala Cynwyd Shopping Center owners won a Go For The Green award for commercial site greening.
Federal Realty Investment Trust, the owners of Bala Cynwyd Shopping Center and Wynnewood Shopping Center, is one of several winners of Lower Merion Township Environmental Advisory Council's 2013 Go For The Green Awards. The annual awards recognize individuals, organizations and businesses that have worked to make environmental improvements. Federal Realty won in the category of Commercial Site Greening for the large rain gardens added at the Bala Cynwyd Shopping Center. Recent thefts prompt county and local civic organization to issue urgent bulletins.
Montgomery County sent out an alert Wednesday afternoon warning of a rash of recent break-ins throughout Lower Merion Township: nine burglaries and four attempted burglaries, by their count. Several of these are detailed in Patch reports this week: Not long after the county's bulletin, the South Ardmore Betterment Alliance (SABA) issued its own alert: Dear Neighbors, Thefts of bicycles from garages and some break-ins have been continuing in our neighborhood. Prudential Fox & Roach compared statistics for 2012 to the three previous years.
Home sales in 2012 increased in Lower Merion and Narberth as well as in Montgomery County and southeastern Pennsylvania, according to a report from the real estate company Prudential Fox & Roach. The company's statistics show the following: The township saw 765 home sales last year, up 22 percent from the 627 sales in 2011. The figure also represented a 33 percent increase over the 574 sales of 2009. The median sale price ticked up, too, from $470,000 in 2011 to $497,000 in 2012. The borough had 55 sales in 2012, up 25 percent from 2011's 44 sales. Both figures still are well short of the 102 sales seen in 2009. Winter conditions and freezing temperatures are expected through to next week in our area.
According to a release issued by Montgomery County, the Code Blue severe weather warning issued last week will continue through 9 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 28. A Code Blue Cold Weather declaration is made in Montgomery County when winter conditions pose a threat of serious harm or death to individuals without shelter. A Code Blue indicates a combination of air temperature and wind chill is anticipated to be 20ºF or less. Friday's forecast for Lower Merion indicates that snow is likely, with a low of 21ºF. Overall, Lower Merion and Narberth had 61 home sales this December, same as in November and up from 56 in December 2011, according to a report from Prudential Fox & Roach. The most dramatic year-to-year gain was in Wynnewood, where 15 homes sold in December, up from 6 homes sold in December 2011. (In November and December combined, 30 Wynnewood properties sold, up from nine in November and December 2011.) Haverford had 44 sales, down from 51 in November and 50 in December 2011. Throughout the entire Main Line, 204 homes sold in November, down from 215 in November but up from 189 in December 2011. The website shows median incomes in census blocks.
A website called Rich Blocks, Poor Blocks is using U.S. Census Bureau data to color-code census tracts on a map according to median income. As might be expected, the neighborhoods of Lower Merion and Narberth are mostly to the "Rich Blocks" end of the spectrum, in shades of green, rather than the reds of the lower-income areas. Users type in a location to pull up its map and can click on each census tract to see the details. Median incomes are expressed with margins of error, since the data comes from American Community Survey sampling. The middle-class income range for Pennsylvania is listed as $44,000 to $53,000, and Lower Merion and Narberth's neighborhoods mostly fall above that range. Elected officials from both Narberth and Lower Merion, the municipalities that share a boundary at the controversial intersection of Wynnewood Road and Wynnewood Avenue, are expected to discuss improvement possibilities at a borough meeting in two weeks. At Monday's Borough Council meeting, Councilman Bob Wegbreit, chairman of the panel's Highway Committee, said the Lower Merion Board of Commissioners is invited to attend his committee's meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28 at the borough government building. Also in attendance will be representatives from Pennoni Associates, who are conducting a traffic study of the Wynnewood & Wynnewood intersection. A pedestrian being struck in December has spurred discussion of the three-way intersection at the curve of East Wynnewood Road and North Wynnewood Avenue.
A public petition to install a traffic signal at East Wynnewood Road and North Wynnewood Avenue—spurred by an accident there in December that left a teenage pedestrian hospitalized—gained traction Wednesday night at a meeting of the Lower Merion Board of Commissioners. Pam Loughman, a Merion Station resident who works in Narberth, started the petition after the Dec. 13 collision. It also calls for crosswalk installation. East Wynnewood Road marks, starting at North Wynnewood Avenue, the boundary between the borough of Narberth and Lower Merion's Wynnewood section.
