Yes, Mexican fare just like about any other cuisine, can be made "haute," if you will. In fact, I experienced that at Xochitl in Philly a few years back, and it was delicious. (Though perhaps to your point, shortly after we went there they changed the menu to a bit more casual.) As for Xilantro, I have yet to try it because of the bad reviews. Driving through downtown Wayne Sunday evening, I noticed that every restaurant was open...everyone except for Xilantro.
