Narberth Avenue Bridge Repairs Scheduled to Start on Halloween

Assistant borough manager Fred Hansell said the exact cost of the contract with J.D. Eckman Inc. is not yet known.

Repairs to the Narberth Avenue bridge, , will begin Monday, assistant borough manager Fred Hansell told Patch Tuesday.

Having found decaying steel girders in an inspection, PennDOT ordered the 109-year-old bridge to close until it could be fixed or replaced. The borough has hired the contractor J.D. Eckman Inc. to perform what Hansell predicted would be "several weeks" of repairs, mostly taking place overnight.

Asked what the cost would be, Hansell said it would not be known for sure until construction begins: "Could be $50,000, could be $100,000."

Pedestrian access has continued while vehicle traffic over the Amtrak-SEPTA railroad tracks has been shut off, and that access will continue through the bridge repairs, Hansell said; crews should never need to block both walkways simultaneously.
