Five Things Happening In The Week Ahead

A decision for some eighth-graders and their parents looms.

1) More wintry precipitation, probably. The National Weather Service calls for a 60 percent chance of snow Tuesday, a 70 percent chance of freezing rain Tuesday night and Wednesday and a 30 percent chance of rain and snow Wednesday night.

2) A battle for Central League supremacy. The Lower Merion girls basketball team visits Springfield at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for a game between arguably the league's two best squads.

3) A possible change in Penn Valley parking. Thomas Pintande, director of township parking, is proposing the elimination of a one-hour zone on Maplewood Avenue, on behalf of merchants there. The restriction would be lifted from Montgomery Avenue to Willow Way, though it would remain in place on the entirely residential remainder of Maplewood. The Board of Commissioners' Police Committee will consider the move at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

4) The end of applications for Ward 1 Commissioner. Applications to replace the outgoing Mark Taylor as Ward 1 Commissioner are due Thursday. (Information is available by calling 610-645-6145 or e-mailing etrainer@lowermerion.org.) Civic associations in Gladwyne and Penn Valley have called for an extension, but the township has announced no such plans.

5) High school choice. Public school eighth-graders living in the immediate vicinity of Lower Merion High School (including part of Narberth) have a choice: walk there for the next four years or be bused to Harriton. The deadline to decide is Friday.
