Lower Merion, Narberth Lawmakers React to Voter ID Law Injunction

State legislators representing Lower Merion and Narberth, Democrats all, expressed relief Tuesday after a judge effectively blocked Pennsylvania's voter identification requirement for this year's general election.

Sen. Daylin Leach (D-Montgomery, Delaware): "I was elated. This is a victory not only for the voters of Pennsylvania, but for everyone who fought for civil rights and voting rights for the past 100 years in America. It ends the most cynical attempt at voter suppression we've ever seen in the state where democracy was born."

Rep. Pam DeLissio (D-194): "I have said pretty consistently throughout, I don't have a problem protecting the integrity of the vote. But trying to do this monumental task in under eight months was just not a reasonable plan at all. This is a very good thing. Now we just have to make sure people aren't totally confused."

Rep. Michael Gerber (D-148): "I have opposed the voter ID law from day one.  While I'm relieved the Court has recognized the disenfranchising effects of the law, and stopped its implementation for the upcoming election, I remain disheartened by my Republican colleagues' cynical and admitted effort to rig the elections, and am grateful the United States Department of Justice is investigating the situation."

Rep. Tim Briggs (D-149): "Today's ruling was a victory for Pennsylvania voters and citizens' constitutional rights. ... While the law was not outright overturned, the court made clear that those of us who are fighting this national GOP ploy to disenfranchise large groups of legal voters have something to fight about."

Representatives for the township's and borough's Democratic and Republican committees did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
